Cruise Day 6: Forth to Florence (and Pisa!)

Cruise Day 6: Forth to Florence (and Pisa!)

For the final day of my waterborne adventure, I booked a double-header: the leaning tower in the morning, the artistic font of Italy in the afternoon.

Pisa surprised me. Both less and more solitary than I expected, the infamous tower presides over three other structures on the Piazza del Duomo, each striking in its own right: a cathedral, a baptistry and a cemetery. Unlike every other site I had visited so far, however, that was it – no town, no shops, just a field of green and enterprising vendors.

Cruise Day 5: Panegyric for Portofino

Cruise Day 5: Panegyric for Portofino

I had always thought the art deco illustrations of Italy were stylized, with their marine blues and crisp whites. Then we arrived in Camuglio, the first stop on our tour of Portofino and its neighbours.

Our introductory glimpse, as we wound our way down to the fishing port, presented to me in life what I had only seen in prints. When our guide granted us an hour of liberty, I stole back up the steps to sketch it.

Cruise Day 4: Merry in Marseille

Cruise Day 4: Merry in Marseille

The sun smiled on Marseille as I ambled through the block known as Le Panier. Alleys lined with balconies and flower boxes reminded me of Barcelona.

Arriving by cruise ship grants the advantage of witnessing the city unfold into wakefulness. The streets lie still, doorways cloaked, traffic muted. Then a shop unfurls, passers-by trickle in a gathering stream, and all is bustling by midday.

An enterprising soap vendor secured my custom with his early hours and colorful displays: bricks of every fragrance imaginable. The surrounding countryside is known for its lavender, and all the souvenirs recalled this theme.

Cruise Day 3: Bedazzled with Barcelona

Cruise Day 3: Bedazzled with Barcelona

A towering statue of Christopher Columbus welcomed us into Barcelona’s harbor yesterday. It saluted my first attempt at a self-guided tour, launched from a cruise ship. I simplified the trial by booking our designated shuttle from the port.

With the streets of the Gothic Quarter lying quiescent on a soft Sunday morning, I directed my steps first to the cathedral. Dwarfed by Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia (a modernist constructionist I had opted not to squeeze in, owing to the distance from city center and my lack of enthusiasm for modernism), the church nonetheless staggered me.

Cruise Day 2: Venturing into Valencia

Cruise Day 2: Venturing into Valencia

Accustomed as I am to Oxford’s severe Gothic, the Baroque of continental Europe never fails to floor me. The cathedral of Valencia combines both: a Gothic bell tower rubs shoulders with its sweeping facade, renovated in the latest style of the eighteenth century.

My first day in port, I had joined an excursion into city center. The guide highlighted the Colosseum-style bullfighting arena, the massive gates of the historic city walls, and the bizarrely futuristic aquarium complex as we rolled towards Valencia.

A Mediterranean cruise

A Mediterranean cruise

Trying something new this trip – instead of booking my overland travel leg by leg, a week-long cruise! After one day at sea, we will stop in a different city every day.

I rushed to the port only to find the terminal empty – with over an hour to go before check-in closed, I was the only passenger boarding. After a passport check, I scrambled up the steps to find myself in plush purple halls, en route to a balcony room.
