
“From glaciers to palm trees,” read the flyers, and I did see at least one of each. The Bernina Express, a scenic rail trip famed for its panoramic windows and expansive views, climbs to the snowy peaks before descending on the little town of Tirano.
The train relies on arches and circular tracks like the one above to achieve radical changes in altitude.


Sparkling snowfall crowned the glacier that gave this train its name.
Besides the breathtaking vistas and ingenious architecture, the trip impressed me with a sweet surprise: a little souvenir box of Swiss chocolates.


Descending into Italy, we passed the marvelous Lake Como before arriving at our final stop in Tirano.
